As the maritime industry undergoes a significant transformation to build towards a more sustainable future, shipping is also needing to equip its people with the knowledge and skills to support and drive this change.
The importance of developing these skills was reflected during the 63rd Annual General Meeting of the European Tugowners Association (ETA), held in Istanbul in June, where delegates received an update on the continued progress and achievements of the GreenPort Alliance, an initiative focused on developing the green skills required across maritime port services.
Multraship was pleased to attend the annual meeting, where representatives from across the European towage sector came together to discuss the future of the industry and the importance of the GreenPort Alliance to the tug and salvage sector. As a long standing member of the ETA and with our Managing Director, Leendert Muller, serving as part of the organisation’s executive committee, Multraship remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen the resilience and sustainability of European towage.
Bringing together academia, industry and representative bodies, the GreenPort Alliance aims to create new higher education and vocational training programmes that prepare current and future maritime professionals for the industry's green transition.
Rather than focusing solely on technological innovation, the GreenPort Alliance recognises that people will be central to achieving lasting change. The project is developing educational programmes that integrate sustainability into port operations, encourage knowledge sharing across the sector and help crews to build the skills needed to operate in an increasingly environmentally conscious industry.
This objective closely reflects Multraship's own approach to developing its teams. Earlier this year, Multraship launched its brand new state-of-the-art simulator and training centre in collaboration with Wärtsilä. Developed by Novatug, the facility provides advanced simulation technology to strengthen the preparedness, decision making and operational effectiveness of crews involved in complex towage and specialist operations.
By investing in these types of high-quality training environments, Multraship is ensuring that its crews are equipped, not only to perform safely and efficiently but to adapt to the evolving demands of modern, sustainable port operations.
This commitment is reflected across our entire business. Under the leadership of our Operations Director Bianca Pielaat, Multraship continues to place a strong emphasis on professional development, operational excellence and creating opportunities for crews to continuously develop their skills throughout their careers. Empowering Multraship’s crews with the right knowledge and practical experience remains fundamental to delivering safe operations whilst protecting the marine environment.
The GreenPort Alliance reinforces this shared ambition across the wider maritime community. By creating modern training pathways and embedding sustainability into maritime education, the initiative is helping to prepare the next generation of professionals for a changing industry.
As discussions at this year's ETA Annual General Meeting demonstrated, collaboration remains essential to building a resilient and sustainable European towage sector. Multraship is proud to support the work of the ETA and initiatives, such as the GreenPort Alliance, that invest in the industry's most valuable asset, its people, while helping to shape a cleaner and more sustainable future.
